Mega Man Review (Japanese Import)
This is my first Japanese Import I’ve bought from the Playstation store, most games are non story based, but a collection of shooters and puzzle games, that have no real back story, and Mega Man is no different.
Story
Not really a story in this one, except Dr.Wily had created some Robot Masters for you to battle, and there are six beginning stages that you can choose yourself, then a final 4 part level where you go for Dr.Wily himself. The story in this one is not really the point, but you probably know that already.
Gameplay
This is classic platformer through and through, Megaman invented the modern action platformer, and running and jumping are the best skills you have available to you in this title. As you defeat the robot masters though you receive new powers that are useful against other bosses in the game. If you’ve never played through this title before it’s a fun to find out which powers are effective against which Boss, but always a little frustrating because dying is something you’ll be doing a lot of in this game (luckily the continues never run out).
As this was originally an NES title, the gameplay is simplistic, but it still stands the test of time, it’s still challenging and fun. There are some points where it is astonishingly difficult though to the point where a trick of pausing the game to get double or triple hits is necessary without throwing your console across the room in frustration.
Graphics
Once again to re-iterate it’s an NES title, and the graphics aren’t anything to gawk over, but they’re colourful and pleasant enough, and the old NES crackles are kept like when there are too many enemies on screen but it doesn’t slow down or effect the gameplay, so it’s comfortable for someone who’s played them before. They added in the same graphics effects on the current console versions of the games, Mega Man 9 and 10, so it’s quite similar, but if you’re a fan, that’s exactly what you want.
How does it hold up today?
Well I must say I enjoyed playing through this one, but the only problem with it is, it was over way to early, if it was a collection of a few of the early games it would be an absolute buy, but a few hours of game time (maybe 2 or 3 at the most) it’s probably not worth the 5.99 price tag. If you’re a die hard fan and want to have them on your PSP, then your in luck, but for most it’s probably easy enough to skip it (and the other sequels that are undoubtedly on the way).
A faithful port of the original, but you can stretch your money a lot better with other PSone Classics on the network.
