After being royal dicks to gamers excited for MegaMan Legends 3, Capcom has said in a post on their official forums that Breath of Fire 4, a beloved RPG of the PS1 age is coming to the North American Playstation Store on August 16th. Info comes from Christian Svensson a senior VP at the company. What will be really interesting is whether it actually is released on that date, considering in the past Capcom has said it expected it’s PSone Classics to be released on the store on a certain date, and they were delayed for some strange reason.
What’s Breath of Fire 4 about?
Well, it’s an RPG that came out the same year as FF9, and despite the heavy competition it received high marks for the detailed graphics (drawn not 3D) and the great musical score. I’ve never played a Breath of Fire game before, but I’m guessing because it’s got an 83% on metacritic Breath of Fire 4 is a good enough RPG to check out. The game before this in the series has not be released as a PSone Classic yet, but that’s no surprise because Breath of Fire 3 was re-released as a PSP game on UMD. The characters in Breath of Fire 4 continue from the earlier games in the series so I’m unsure whether there are some important plot points that are missed in this version, it will take some more investigation, but it seems like it’s centered around a main character named Ryu and his companions like they do in all games in the series.
There are five games in the series, the first two released on the Super Nintendo (of which Breath of Fire 2 is available on the Wii Virtual Console), the last Breath of Fire game, “Dragon Quarter”, was released on the Playstation 2 in 2002 (2003 in Europe and North America). Quite a pedigree, for this one, it’s strange that there hasn’t been a new game in 9 years.
