Games MIA
Before the PSN service was hacked, we had a slew of PSone Classics coming our way, Final Fantasy VI, Parasite Eve 2, and Chrono Trigger. Strangely enough it’s been over a month since the service was restored but sadly NA has not gotten the chance to buy this classic games, but they have been released in the PAL territories. They have released some other PSone Classics, but not the promised ones that everyone is waiting for…
This is an underlying problem with the PSN service, we get a promise and an announcement that these games are coming, but we never know when. Right now PSN’s PSone Classics service is similar to a Film studio always putting a “coming soon” at the end of their trailers, but never telling you it’s being released, until the week before it’s in theatres. The Playstation Blog’s “The Drop” post takes care of this announcement. I would rather have a set schedule to know which games are coming out when. This is not a problem with digital distribution systems like PSN though, Steam manages to keep everything on time with retail releases.
Why isn’t PSN staying on top of it’s Customer service?

Handling PSOne Classics has been one of Sony’s longstanding problems. I’m not entirely without sympathy for all the emulator tweaks they have to do and licensing fees they have to pay, but that’s no excuse.
To a certain extent, I expect that you are completely right to compare this to the film industry. They make the trailers while the movie is still being edited and don’t know exactly when it will be ready; it’s the same thing here, only with licenses.

The funny thing is if the game does get rated by the ESRB the licences should be all ready. Those tests have to be paid for by someone, and they’re certainly not going to pay for something until they know for sure that the licence is sewn up.
With many of the things they say about how long it takes for the emulator to test things etc. I’m reminded of a vice president of Square Enix twittering that they were going to bring up FF9 as a PSone Classic at a meeting and then it was released in Japan and Europe within a month, and then in NA in six weeks. Once the licence is there it shouldn’t take any time at all for it to all go through. Like it did with Square. Hell, Capcom said it had their games ready months in advance, and they announced them all coming at the same time as well. Sony released them months later. There’s something afoot going on there I think.

I think Sony is just being mean. If PSN didn’t get hacked, and the release date was on schedule, maybe some of these games would be discounted for Playstation Plus members. I think all these games will be released in August after all of the free 30 days for everyone expires. (I think the final day to get Playstation Plus from the Welcome Back Program is July 5) Thus, people who didn’t keep their subscriptions will have to pay full price.

Relevant.

@ Steven, I think you’re right on that fact, before the hack as well, all Japanese Import titles were only 3 dollars for PS-Plus members, but now considering everyone is part of it, it’s not…
I’m not sure you can still call them mean though, considering I got 4 free games from them within the last month, there are worse things they could do.
@ Cameron Ward
I’m interested in trying this Chrono Trigger as well, at the moment I’m trying to get through the most frustrating game of all time, Vagrant Story, I’m pretty close to giving up on it, despite it’s good parts.

It does seem strange; Square Enix released a bunch of Classics before the outage, and now nothing. The lack of Parasite Eve 2 really bugs me, since SE promised we would get it in a press release months ago and it still hasn’t even been rated yet.
I was going to wait to play The 3rd Birthday so that I could play PE2 first, but its already been a long wait…..

I’m going to wait to play the 3rd birthday until I can get PE2, they could have kept a lot more momentum if they were more on the ball with that stuff though.

…I really don’t know what to say about waiting on PE2 for 3rd Birthday. I played PE2 back in the day, so I dove right in and…well, I’ll save my thoughts for Brennan’s review.
I would certainly recommend taking a break and playing something else between them. 3rd Birthday isn’t just derived from PE2; it’s also a dead opposite.

I heard it’s the opposite, and even though the 3rd birthday got a lot of flack for not being in the same league as the other two games I would like to play the first two to see the difference. Hell, maybe I’ll be in luck and there will be a deal on it by the time I get and play PE2. I can always hope.
