Nintendo DS Dark Blue

Today word came that Nintendo is releasing a new piece of hardware for the hand held market. So, what does this new device mean for psp users?

If the media is to be believed (this is supposedly confirmed by Nintendo) The new hand held, the 3DS is going to be a system capable of 3D visuals in your hand. This is an interesting concept that I’d love to see in practice, but the really interesting thing is how will Sony respond?

Sony is just about to launch it’s Playstation Move, the game company’s response to the rabid success of the Wii, but will Nintendo out innovate again with this new 3D console? Let’s take a look at the new device’s features.

- That a new handheld, called the Nintendo 3DS, will be released sometime during Nintendo’s next financial year (Apr 2010 – March 2011).

- It will be capable of producing 3D graphics, without the need for 3D glasses.

- The 3DS will be backwards compatible with the entire line of Nintendo DS products.

- It will be properly revealed during the E3 trade show in Los Angeles, which will take place in June.

This all sounds very good from the outset. It seems like the ball is in Sony’s  court. I’m hoping that their new device has some of the wished features that we have here. But we’ll just have to wait and see. Sony will need to release it’s PSP2 in the same time frame to stay competitive in the handheld market. The most interesting aspect I believe is the 3D graphics without the need for glasses, it’s hypothesized that it will use a motion sensor to tailor the image, but the science of it goes over my head at the moment. Hopefully we’ll get a hardware response from Sony soon.
